Like a Volcano...Cuba will explode!

It's only a matter of time...as the older revolutionaries weaken and eventually pass on...the younger ones, having witness the waste of lives lived by their elders and know ing this too will be their fate someday...unless they...

Cuban exiles have been wishing, hoping, dreaming that the island would explode when Fidel was gone, but in my opinion that's very unlikely. The island is already going through a preparatory stage in which Fidel is there, but no longer with his hands on the levers of power.

The main influence Fidel has now, whether you exiles like it or not, and for better or for worse, are his IDEAS.

Your pictures are lovely, but your rhetoric is the same old same old tired exile dreamings.

You are right...they are "his" ideas and not of or for the Cubans. Imagine a Cuba where differing ideas other than "his" can be expressed freely without fear.

It would be nice of you to open up your BLOG...link me up feature me there...I notice that you feature several different photographers that is the "same old same old tired socialist dreaming" and not even in spanish. Feature me...Just a link "the reality of Cuba" or just be like Fidel and be the dictator of your Blog/site.

Roy, don't pay attention to comments like Lippmann's; I've seen his on other Cuban blogs, it's just not worthy.

Keep up the good work, because along with the sad reality of Cuba, your photos are also portraying the reality of my generation, those that were born and raised under a brain-washing system that stole our best years... and it's stealing the lives of the ones we've left behind.

Love the black & white; it's the subliminal effect of the sadness of the life in Cuba that, otherwise, you can only tell and not "show".

Unlike Walter, my blog is open and I welcome all comments and I respond to all comments. This site will not be hijacked but I think having an open mind and sharing different points of view is healthy.

Thank you for your comments about the visual reality of Cuba that I have witnessed. Spread the word!

I personal enjoy the medium of black and white photography. Many of Roy's images are eloquent and well-presented. But to read into them a sadness which isn't there is more an expression of the projection of the author than it is of the reality of Cuba itself.

There are warm, bright, atractive and upbeat people in Cuba. There are also depressed, downbeat and demoralized people living in Cuba. In that sense, it's just like any other country.

Here's a nice image (not great photography like Roy's, I'll certainly admit), but fun to see because wh'd have thought the Young Communist League of Cuba would have called for a national "smooch-in" to celebate Valentine's day?

I'm completely open about my views and approach. They're stated clearly on the home page, and when I post my personal opinions.

I specialize in sharing a wide-range of opinions on the CubaNews list. THIS blog is filled with opponents of the Cuban Revolution and system. That's fine. And I do appreciate Roy leaving someone like me umoderated. That says something good about Roy as a host.

But Roy could post to my list as well, since he's a subscriber. I do not moderate the list to prevent other opinions from being expressed, just to keep the tone civil. But I'm going to keep control over the pace and expressions, that's all.

The CubaNews list, which I moderate is open to those comments which I consider useful. Roy is a subscriber, but he chooses not to post there. Tht is his right, though I would probably approve some of his messages, for the interest of my readers. There are a hundred other blogs and websites opposed to the Cuban Revolution and the system which it represents.

Yes, Roy, I like your photography. It's your political opinions with which I disagree, and the related projections about the future. No one can predict the future with exact precision, anyway.

Gee Walter...I never realized all Cuban exiles thought alike. Stop doing things that you are incapable of like offering a logical opinion. Stick with what you know like fast food preparation.

Walter, To read a photograph? My photos do represent my point of view....but they are not contrived or set up...they represent a broad range of experiences that as a sum represent a reality of Cuba in our time. There is much sadness in Cuba...maybe what your experience is... with Cubans that benefit from their experience with you. They always have a certain way about them when befriended by one with money. I don't project nor am I proactive in my images...but reactive to the reality of Cuba and how that is projected on the faces of the Cubans that I photograph. The reality of Cuba is not similiar to the rest of the world...there is no freedom of choice, expression, to travel, to education...

As for your Blog...I find it hard to find some one that is contrary to your agenda. I was never informed of my right to post...nor do I see a link to my images as they are many links on your Blog that refers to beautiful images and a very one sided view of the Cuban people. How would one like myself get a link, a commentary as others have had from you...better yet how do I comment...??

It's unfortunate that the post that this comment is addressing was a post that fuels the fires...has had the most commentary...in comparison to the countless others that have yet to be commented on.

The unfortunate issue is we could have this conversation very public...in the USA and it would go on for however long and with a civil and constructive tone...

But if we were to have these discussions in Cuba...I would quickly be taken in and harassed by the "authorities" as happened to me in Jan of 07...for speaking freely.
